Thank you for visiting the geek nest!
My name is Gareth, I was born in the UK in the early eighties. The geeknest is my repository of things I’ve created and things I find interesting.
I love games of all kinds, video games, board games, role play games and card games.
While I’ve been playing video games for a lot longer, and I grew up with the usual board game suspects like Monopoly and Cluedo. Aside from the occasional foray into Warhammer and Warhammer 40K, I didn’t discover the wider world of board gaming until the mid 2000s, when bought a bunch of 8th edition Magic: The Gathering booster packs in a sale bin. Around the same time I found a copy of Twilight Imperium Third Edition in a local toy shop, and found it fascinating.
As well as being a gaming geek nerd I am also a massive nerd for all things tech. As long as I can remember, I’ve found certain things really interesting, like electronics and physics, making things and understanding how the world works.
My first exposure to computers came in the mid 80s when my Dad bought himself a NewBrain microcomputer and I would watch while he copied programmes out of magazines. A few years later I was given a second hand Commodore 64, and my Dad taught me the dark magic that is the BASIC programming language.
In my early teens I was diagnosed with Myalgic Encephalomyelitis, and while it waxes and wanes over the years, I still suffer with it, and it limits what I can do in a day. ME is also know as Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, or CFS. That’s not a name I really like, as there tends to be a belief that it’s just about being tired. It’s really not. The fatigue and pain can be all consuming, and when you’d rather be planning a story for a role play group or writing some code, the confusion or brain fog that comes with it is incredibly frustrating.
